Chapter 10

The rest of Evelyn’s week was difficult, yet uneventful. She’d found the drapes she wanted. She’d picked out a few new blouses and slipped them into Shy’s luggage. And she’d kept herself busy. Things had turned awkward with Shy as Evelyn struggled to process their request. Shy had declined to go with her to church for counseling, and demurred when Evelyn suggested Pastor Evans could come to her house to talk with them after services instead. It seemed Shy had made their choice, and Evelyn could not understand why. That was such a hard life and she knew the world would punish her child. She sighed. Bit by bit, Evelyn was fighting through denial and acknowledging her child as “Shy” internally; however, she still couldn’t bring herself to say the name in public. Not yet at least. And by the time Shy’s visit ended, Evelyn could tell her child wasn’t satisfied with Evelyn’s attempts to figure out how to handle this news. Shy’s leaving two days ago had been marked by a lack of warmth and increased awkwardness, and things had been tense with her child for the last half of the visit.

But as she drove to the Westwood district, her thoughts turned to that conversation at lunch almost a week ago. Evelyn had felt the strain of Shy slowly pulling away almost like a physical thing. This wasn’t the first time parent and child hadn’t seen things eye to eye. But it felt bigger than the usual disagreements. Evelyn worried that something had been irreparably damaged, though what, and how to fix it, well, that was the problem, wasn’t it?

As a mother, her heart strings pulled, knowing that Shy was hurt by her reaction to the unexpected news. She huffed as she changed lanes, easing down the street. But as a woman of God, her heart choked. How could she not be afraid for Shy’s choices? How could she be expected to just accept that her child was clearly living in sin? And it didn’t help that now she would have to pretend to her friends that everything was still perfect in her world. After all, her church community looked up to her.

What a mess Shy had brought her into.

Evelyn found a parking spot and exited the car. As she walked towards the entrance of the coffee shop, she felt a fission of nervousness. She hoped she wouldn’t regret agreeing to meet up. But maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. After all, people changed, right?

Evelyn shrugged and walked inside.

“Over here, Evelyn!” A lady in a pleasing yellow-patterned pantsuit waved and immediately commanded Evelyn’s attention. Evelyn walked over to the excited woman and gave her a quick hug.

Evelyn believed people were like seasons; they came to serve a purpose in your life, and then they moved on. But Mrs. Margaret “Mae” Delroy was different. Mae Delroy was like a slow-moving storm and it wasn’t until Evelyn was directly under the eye that she recognized that under the charm there was something else, something that made her feel uneasy.
